I would not sell customer information. Instead, I would have a signup posted in the café for people that are interested in having their information given to the record store. I doubt many people would sign up for this, but then why would I think that they would agree with the company getting a large sum of money for selling their information.
I agree with Jane. I do not think we are legally constrained from selling this information since it is not considered personally identifying information that could be used to steal an individuals identity. From a public relations standpoint, I think we are better off not selling this information without customer consent as we could suffer reputation risk and loss of current and future customers if it was discovered that we were selling customer information without their permission.
I am okay with a sign-up sheet. We could announce its existence before shows and sell only the names of those who sign up.
I agree with both of you. I don’t think it would be right for us to sell our customers’ names to someone else. Not that it is illegal, but because we care about our customers. Some of them may be annoyed with emails and other solicitation coming from this records store. And we definitely don’t want them to find out it was our fault. I agree with the sing up sheet. If the records store wants to do a little advertisement in our café, we can charge them for that and just leave it at that.
This is something that we could, like most of the authentic websites do. Have a checkbox on this sign-up sheet which says, would you like to receive promotional emails or advertisements. If you do, what kind. This gives the customer the flexibility to choose.
